Robert C. Morton

(In Memoriam)

Robert C. Morton practiced law in Chicago for over fifty years. He grew up in Hyde Park and attended the University of Chicago Lab School, University, and Law School, earning his Juris Doctor Degree in 1953. Bob began his practice immediately following his graduation, with a focus in personal injury, general family practice, and bankruptcy law. In the 1970’s, Bob opened the first law clinic in the Midwest, and pioneered the practice of legally advertising to the public, following the California ruling of Legal Clinic of Bates & O’Steen v. State Bar of California. To this day, his former clients and their family members remember him fondly, not only for the work he did for them, but for the open door he provided to people from all walks of life. He so loved the people that came to him for advice and support that people would often sit with him and talk about life and subjects unrelated to their cases almost every day. In addition to practicing law, Bob founded and supported for years the non-profit publication of the Longmeadow Journal of Short Stories, which contained children’s fiction, selected from responses to contest submissions to schools and libraries. A lover of Hemingway’s work, he obtained the rights and produced a short film based on Ernest Hemingway’s “A Clean Well Lighted Place.” He also collected stories by Chicago fiction authors and published two editions of the acclaimed book “Chicago Works,” the first with a forward by Scott Turow, and the second with a forward by Mayor Richard M. Daley. For the first Chicago Works, Bob was awarded Chicago Tribune Publisher of the Year.
